Penny Rugs

From the middle of the 19th century, penny rugs were traditionally made out of felted wool (it means that the wool was washed to shrink it. Despite their name, penny rugs were not so cheap and served as decorative table cloths or even wall hangings.

The name "penny" comes from the coins that were used as templates for the circles.

Most penny rugs had simple shapes of flowers or animals, which were usually layered and appliquéd on the rug with blanket stitch embroidery in contrasting colors.

The simple and from the first sight a primitive style gives penny rugs a charm that has continued through the years and is highly appreciated in the countries throughout the world.
